When the TOPS system was first introduced different Class numbers were applied to individual coaches of a multiple-unit. The driving cars were a different Class from the trailers and so on. This was rationalised later so that the whole unit was of the same Class. Also over time mechanical and body changes meant that some units were reclassified. Most of these changes have been documented in books and on websites so I leave it to the individual to do their own research. On these pages I have tried to use the unit Classes which were used after the initial multi-Class approach. However I am sure that you will discover errors in my attempts to "get it right".
